Q&A: I am interested in the photography industry, but not sure how to get there?

Question by rosi: I am interested in the photography industry, but not sure how to get there?
I am still in high school but would love traveling around the world photographing critical situations that the public need to be informed of.
like endangered animals or on going wars like the one in uganda.

i have big dreams but at my small high school there are not any classes specifically in photography to help me push in that direction. I am in journalism and yearbook. But is there anything else that can help me pursue my career?

How did you start and rise to the top?
Thanks for any of your tips and suggestions! :D

My question to you is: Will you succumb to the pressures of a Liberal media that dramatizes the lies and never reports the truth or, will you find that no-one wants to know the truth because the media is controlled by the Liberal factions.

I have found that, if you really want to know the truth… go there, don’t read about it.

By all means, don’t fall for the lies of Al Gore (who, by the way, lives in a mansion in Tennessee that uses 238 times the energy of the average home yet he wants US to conserve energy).

The Polar Bear IS NOT endangered (the Australian videographer that filmed them on the ice flows reported that it was August and the bears did not appear in any danger or threat). Ice melts in August on the North Pole… just like it melts in Antarctica.

I have one suggestion… keep your credibility.

I’m in the same position that you are and I’ve been asking a lot of pro photography folks how to get started. After additional research on the web and other advice from friends and family, I came up with the following tips:

    - Get a good entry-level D-SLR (digital single lense reflex) camera like a Nikon D40 or a Canon Rebel XS or XTi. Lot of pros use D-SLR .

    - Shoot, shoot, shoot. Go out and take photos whenever you can. Set goals for yourself and the kind of photos you are taking. Practice is the one thing that will 1) keep you interested 2) Improve your abilities 3) Set you apart from the enthusiasts

    - Grab good digital photography handbooks (old and current) from a local library or bookstore. They teach you the equipment (flashes, tripods, lighting, lenses, etc, etc) and various types of photography that you can do. Books by Tom Ang are pretty good.

    - Pick up some photography magazines and photo books by certain photographers and learn what good photography looks like. They’ll teach you the different ways you can compose different shots.

    - Learn the business aspects of photography, the equipment needed and the cost of doing business as a professional photographer.

    - Don’t be shy, no one is awesome when they first start out. Like I said, get out and shoot as much as you can. Pick and choose your subjects and have a purpose for your choices.

Lastly, picking out equipment can be daunting as you’ll be faced with the “growing into” vs “growing with” dilemma. Visit http://kenrockwell.com for well-rounded equipment reviews and just great information about photography in general.

    Hope that all helps.
